She worried the sound of her loudly thumping heart would give her away, as she peered around a corner. Suddenly, Isabelle was surrounded by Nazi soldiers, their black boots pounding on the pavement, barring her way…1939, Berlin. Max Albrecht is the young and handsome heir to a beautiful house on a lake where he spent his happy childhood. As war approaches, his parents tell him he must join the Nazi party or the whole family will be killed. But when his beloved French fiancé Isabelle shows him the horrifying truth, Max faces an impossible choice: protect his family or save the girl he loves?2010, San Francisco. Anna Young is content with her life, running a bustling deli and taking care of her adored grandfather Max, who raised her. Max has never spoken of his past until he hands over an old map, the plans to a grand house just north of Berlin. Book The House by the Lake: Gripping and emotional World War 2 fiction (Secrets of Paris) Review :

It's 1934 and Max Albrecht a member of a German Aristrotracic family who owns a very large estate in Prussia meets Isabel de Florian a French girl chaperoned by her grandmother Marthe while on holiday in Switzerland. Max and Isabel are enamored of each other, and Max invites Isabel to spend Christmas with his family. Hitler is in power and all Germans including the Albrechts (but not Max) support him, making Isabel of France an enemy. Max resists as long as possible before joining the German Military. Then an intriguing romance is sandwiched between the suspense of German occupation of France and the dangerous schemes that Max and Isabel try to keep in communication. After the war is over, Max never returns to the Family estate to which he is heir. Instead he goes to California, never forgetting Isabel, A newspaper clipping showing a boarded-up Paris apartment, intrigues Max as he realizes the apartment in the one where Isabel resided with her Grandmother. He enlists his American granddaughter, Anna, to go to Germany to find his Family estate and retrieve from the floorboards of the Manor House, the engagement ring he had purchased and hidden for Isabel. Anna becomes enmeshed in the mystery of who owns the estate and the scorn all have for Max. This is a very good suspenseful story of unrequited love amid the long-lasting attitudes of the extened Albrecht family members
This is a fascinating book weaving together two stories over 70 years apart.Anna runs a successful Cafe in San Francisco. She also takes care of her 94 year old Grandfather, Max, whom she adores. Max has never spoken about his past. However, a story in the newspaper about the discovery of an abandoned apartment in Paris prompts him to request Anna to go to his hometown in Germany in search of something valuable that he had left behind in his home.As Anna digs deeper into her family secrets things begin to unravel and she becomes more involved. The book was absolutely riveting even though some things did not ring true. Why would a very busy and successful lawyer, representing the new owner of Max’s family Schloss suddenly putaside so much time is helping Anna.
